A Civil Air Patrol unit from Chicago's western suburbs didn't manage to set a new world record for the highest paper airplane flight.
The Fox Valley Composite Squadron's attempted record fell short Sunday when the paper airplane attached to a large helium weather balloon climbed to only 51,000 feet.
The Daily Herald reports that was about 30,000 feet short of the world record that had been set in Spain in 2010. The group had hoped their balloon would climb to more than 100,000 feet. It eventually landed near Monticello, Ind.
The group says they're disappointed they didn't break the record. But say the experiment was a learning experience for the squadron's cadets, who range in age from 12 to 17.
