Ice Dams to Wreak Havoc On Roofs

This brutal winter is not only making it uncomfortable to walk outside and get around -- it can also be hazardous to your house.

Burst water pipes have already been an issue for many homeowners but as the weather warms up, backed up ice jams will create problems on the roof.

"I had a new roof put on several years ago. I hope it protects us, I'll have to see," Orland Park homeowner Louis Sineni said.

With the record snowfall this season, roofer Kevin Bumstead says the problems start with poorly insulated attics that allows heat to escape onto the roof.

"The heat will escape up there and it will warm up the snow from underneath," Bumstead said. "The ice damming starts forming at the gutter edge, then starts freezing at night, creeps up, then thaws in the morning, and then it always freezes more than it thaws, and keeps in creeping up underneath the shingles," Bumstead said.

Roofers always know how busy they'll be based on the road. The more potholes, the more business they'll receive, because it's the same freezing effect.
