Parts of Hyde Park Under Boil Order After Water Main Issue Contaminates Water

Residents and business owners in the impacted areas should boil their water for at least five minutes before consuming it

The University of Chicago and some surrounding areas in Hyde Park are under a boil order after a water main installation went wrong Saturday morning.

Affected areas include all campus, business and residential buildings from 56th Street in the north to 59th Street in the south and from Dorchester Avenue in the east to Cottage Grove Avenue in the west.

Residents and business owners in the impacted areas should boil their water for at least five minutes before consuming it. This includes water used for drinking, making ice cubes, washing food, washing dishes and brushing teeth.

The boil order remains in effect until at least Sunday morning pending quality tests, city officials said.

The issue arose when a water main being installed in the 1100 block of East 57th Street was not properly flushed before it was connected and put into service. The Department of Water Management has since flushed and sanitized the new main, but the boil order was put into place until officials are certain water safety is no longer an issue.
