Hunting for Hatchimals: Chicago Stores See High Demand For Furry Toy

It’s the hot toy this holiday season—and it’s nearly impossible to find in the Chicago area.

“We typically get around 40 to 50 guest calls per day inquiring if we have any in stock,” says Amy Henson, manager of the Target in the city’s Bucktown neighborhood.

Shoppers searching for Hatchimals, a cuddly creature inside an egg that hatches, are having a tough time at area stores—but help could be on the way. Jorge Arroyo, manager of Toys R Us in Roscoe Village says he’s expecting a new shipment Sunday.

“We don’t have a number as to how many we’ll receive,” Arroyo said. “When we open up our doors on Sunday morning at 8 a.m., these items will sell very quickly.”

Hatchimals typically cost between $60 and $70—but on eBay they’re going for much more.

A message posted on the Hatchimals website says more of the cutesy toys are on the way.

“We have increased production and a whole new batch of Hatchimals will be ready to hatch in early 2017,” the statement reads. “This is a special season and we don't want anyone to be disappointed.”

Target says shoppers looking for the toy can call overnight to see if a new shipment has arrived—the phone lines are staffed around the clock. But beware: the shipments are selling out immediately, so you’ll have to get up early and wait in line.
