More than 500 flights were canceled Monday as another round of severe weather threatened the Chicago area.

O’Hare International Airport reported 450 flight cancelations by 1:30 p.m. Monday and Midway International Airport reported 60 cancelations.

Severe storms were spotted moving into parts of northern Illinois Monday morning as forecasters warned of “hurricane-force winds” of up to 80 mph. Several counties were under severe thunderstorm warnings and watches, with more severe weather expected for later Monday.

The NWS said an “explosive severe thunderstorm development” was expected across southern Wisconsin and into Iowa during the afternoon hours. Those storms are expected to spread into northern Illinois by the late afternoon and evening hours, bringing with them the threat for hail the size of golf balls, wind gusts in excess of 70 mph, heavy rain, frequent lightning and the potential for an isolated tornado or two.

Thunderstorms are forecast to spread south of I-80 during the evening hours as the severe threat diminishes.

The storms come on the first full day of summer as temperatures are forecast to rise near 90 degrees.

Thunderstorms are also possible again early Wednesday and again Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
