Human Skull Found In Gary

City worker stumbled across human skull while checking water leak

A City of Gary worker discovered a human skull Thursday afternoon while on the job, police said.

The water department employee spotted the human skull around 27th Avenue and Maryland Street, according to the Northwest Indiana Times. The worker was checking a water leak when he noticed the skull.

The coroner was called to the scene along with Dr. Steve Nawrocki, a forensic anthropologist and professor of biology and anthropology at the University of Indianapolis. He and his team of four graduate students recently supervised the exhumation of remains found in Hammond, Ind.

Dr. Nawrocki and his team will investigate the scene on Saturday, police told the Northwest Indiana Times. Until then, the area is closed off for security measures.
