Illinoisans Ranked Among “Biggest Braggers” on Social Media: Survey

Illinois ranks sixth as the most braggadocious state in the U.S.

If you have a Facebook or Instagram and you’re from Illinois chances are you’re bragging about your great life, according to a new survey.

The survey, released by the "Hey Lets" app, ranked the biggest braggers in the United States and Illinoisans were ranked among the top 10. The survey asked 2,500 Americans, who participate in social media, to rate post that they typically make on potentially self-promotional topics, including trips to special locations, attendance at memorable events and work-related good news.

Compared to the most boastful state, California, where 77 percent of residents frequently self-promote on social media, Illinois wasn't far behind. With 67 percent of people posting self-promotional content on social media, Illinois came in at sixth place.

“On social networks like Facebook and Instagram, many so-called 'status updates' are really 'brag-ommendatons' -- opportunities to enhance your status with friends and followers by showcasing your apparently amazing life,” Hey Lets said in a release.

Among the popular topics of self-promotion on social media were going on a trip, attending a memorable event, meeting a noteworthy person, something nice a significant other did and getting work-related good news, the study found.

California was followed by fellow "braggers" in Washington, Nevada, Maryland and New Hampshire on the list.

Who doesn’t like to tell their friends and family all the positive stuff happening with them?

Apparently, Utah doesn’t. The survey lists them as the most humble state in the U.S. with only 22 percent of residents being brag-happy posters. Also listed among the "most humble states" were Oregon, South Carolina, Kansas, Arizona and Arkansas.
