A homeowner shot two intruders, one of them fatally, during an attempted home invasion in a southwest Chicago suburb.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office said the victim of a home invasion in Palos Park shot two men, killing one of them and wounding the other. Police noted the victim also had a valid concealed carry license.

Neighbors said the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quiet neighborhood near 118th Street and Will-Cook Road.

“We heard a popping sound and at that time we thought it was like firecrackers or whatever,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons.

Witnesses said nearly 30 officers responded to the scene with helicopters and K-9 officers.
