Volleyball Coach Charged for Photographing Girl in Locker Room

Oak Lawn police arrested a high school employee after he allegedly took secret photos inside the girl’s locker room

Oak Lawn police arrested a varsity girls' volleyball coach after he allegedly took photos inside the girl’s locker room.

A female student from Richard’s High School found a cell phone that she believed was taking photos of her while she was changing on Oct. 30, according to a press release from the Oak Lawn Police Department. An investigation showed that a school employee who had access to the area was possibly involved.

A warrant later obtained for a school employee's cell phone revealed the female student had been photographed, according to the release. Raymond Van Syckle, 31, who police said was the owner of the phone, was arrested and charged with unauthorized video recording on Nov. 2.

Van Syckle is being held on $75,000 bond, according to the police department's press release. His attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Community High School District 218 Superintendent Dr. Ty Harting said that Van Syckle is a varsity girls' volleyball coach for the school. He has been suspended without pay and that the school district is consulting with attorneys about his future employment.

At this time, Harting said the district is unaware of any other victims and that despite the ongoing investigation, "there is no immediate risk to our students."

"We are working in cooperation with the Oak Lawn police department and need to respect the privacy of the victim and let the investigation run its course," the statement read.

However, some residents question if there might have been a "risk" prior to the arrest.

"I think they were surprised but they also mentioned something that it doesn't fully surprise them because he was always flirtatious with the girls,” said Michelle Gonzalez, whose children attend the school.

“You always think ‘oh not the school where my kids go’ because this is a really nice school and I've never had any problems like this before at this school,” parent Larry Forberg said.
