Hardest Words to Spell for Each State: Report

Illinoisans apparently struggled with the word “grey"

As the National Spelling Bee comes to an end with winning words like scherenschnitte and nunatak, a new report has shown which words non-championship spellers are spell-checking in each state.

According to a report from Vocativ and Google Trends, which analyzed data detailing the most Googled spellings of words in each state, Illinoisans struggle with spelling the word “grey," which the Associated Press says should be spelled "gray."

Illinois wasn’t the only state to heavily Google the proper spelling of “grey,” however. California, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and Virginia also had trouble with the word.

That’s not as bad as Arkansas, where residents frequently looked up how to spell “diarrhea,” and Delaware, where there might be some sort of foot fungus problem based on the number of searches for "parynichia," which is properly spelled “paronychia.”

Other troublesome words were “hors d’oeuvres,” “Hanukkah,” "cancelled" and "vacuum."

Wisconsin residents apparently can’t spell Chihuahua, which was typically searched as “chiwawa,” and Idahoans struggled to spell “civilian,” instead searching for “cevilian.” Maine residents often searched for "frusterated" instead of "frustrated" and people in Utah Googled "awnry" instead of "ornery."
