Hammond School Superintendent Beaten During Home Invasion

Thieves may have broken into home after it lost power

The superintendent for the School City of Hammond is recovering from serious injuries after he was beaten during a home invasion Monday night.

Walter Watkins suffered severe head injuries in the attack and is recovering from his injuries at a local hospital, the NWI Times reported.

Watkin's sister discovered him at his home in the 6700 block of Indi-Illi Parkway in Hammond Tuesday morning.

Police say the incident is believed to have happened sometime between 9:30 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday, and that the power was out in the home because of the storm.

One or more people broke into the home, according to police. Several items were stolen, including Watkins' 2013 black Ford Edge with Indiana license plate number 20680.

Watkins is conscious, but his exact condition was not released.
