Man in Custody After Gurnee Barricade Situation

Man in custody after barricading himself inside a Gurnee home

A Zion man was taken into custody Friday morning after he barricaded himself inside a Gurnee house, prompting a lockdown of area schools.

Police said the man fired two rounds from a gun at about 6:50 a.m. Friday before entering the home in the 4400 block of Raven Court, according to the Chicago Tribune. The four people in the house at the time ran out and called police. Police told the Tribune the people know the man.

Police set up a barricade and locked down three area schools. A message on the District 56 website states the disturbance was in the residential area that's adjacent to River Trail School.

"Buses and staff members were diverted to Viking School and students and staff will be housed there until it is safe to return the students and staff to River Trail School," the district message reads.

Liz Schmeling dropped off her daughter at school at 8 a.m. and noticed something felt strange.

"I'm going to stay here until I find out what's going on," Schmeling said. "I spoke to one of the officers in the parking lot, and he said the kids are safe, they're on lockdown."

It's not clear what led to the barricade situation.
