Griffith, Hammond High School Basketball Seasons Canceled After On-Court Brawl

The fight broke out after a Hammond player fouled a Griffith player, causing him to hit a wall head-first

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has canceled the remainder of Griffith and Hammond high schools' boys basketball seasons in response to a weekend brawl.

IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox said Tuesday that "it is with regret yet purpose" the schools' remaining basketball seasons have been canceled and other sanctions imposed.

The governing body is also suspending the schools from participating in the boys state basketball tournament and directed that Sectional 17, hosted by Hammond Gavit, be reconfigured as a five-team tournament.

The two schools also must pay a $500 forfeiture fee to each hosting school remaining on their schedules for away games.

A brawl erupted Saturday in Griffith High School's gymnasium after a Hammond player fouled a Griffith player, causing him to hit a wall head-first.
