Giant Ice Balls Spotted on Lake Michigan

Add another strange weather phenomenon to the list of the oddities Mother Nature has created this week.

The subzero temperatures are creating giant ice balls on the Michigan shoreline of Lake Michigan.

The boulder-sized balls form when chunks break off from sheets of ice covering the lake, and the churning waves form the pieces into balls.

A Youtube video shows the balls washing up on shore in Glen Arbor, Mich.

AccuWeather.com meteorologist Jim Andrews says the balls continue to gain size as layers of water coat the ball and freeze.
