Giant, Head-Shaped Pots To Go Up On Michigan Avenue

Each sculpture will be 12 feet tall and weigh around 3,000 pounds

Giant, head-shaped potted plants will go up on a major Chicago street for the summer in a beautification project and as a way to raise environmental awareness.

It's part of the Chicago Cultural Mile initiative that highlights a stretch of Michigan Avenue running from the Chicago River south to Roosevelt Road.

Each sculpture will be 12 feet tall and weigh around 3,000 pounds. Plants grow out of the top in an explosion of hair fashioned from flowers, ferns and other vegetation.

The organizers say they're constructed from recycled aluminum, steel and what they call 'sustainable concrete.' Area businesses and organizations are footing the bill.

The fanciful pots are the brain child of the not-for-profit group, Plant Green Ideas.

Project details were unveiled Tuesday at a sustainability conference in Chicago.
