Gearing up for Memorial Day

Chicago prepares for its annual parade

This Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be a good one.

The holiday weekend will kick off  Saturday, May 29, with the annual Memorial Day parade at 12 p.m. The parade will begin at Daley Plaza and proceed south on State Street from Wacker Drive to Van Buren Street.

The parade will include marching bands, Veterans’ groups and military vehicles. A wreath laying ceremony at Daley Plaza will take place before the parade at 11 a.m.

Chicago’s first Memorial Day Parade was in 1870, and Mayor Daley proclaimed it an annual tradition in 1997.

The parade and all Memorial Day events commemorate the sacrifices made in service of our country.
