At least one person was killed in a small plane crash late Wednesday in Gary, Ind.

The single-engine plane crashed around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at 7th Street and Clark Road, near West Gary Lighthouse Charter School, Gary officials said. That's about a mile from the Gary/Chicago International Airport.

"We were very fortunate that none of the children or any of the attendees at the community center were in danger at any time," said Mary Karen Freeman-Wilson.

The plane took off from Smyrna, Tenn., at 9:25 a.m. and was supposed to land in Gary at 11:19 a.m. but never made it.

There were no survivors, officials said. It's not known if the pilot was traveling with anyone. The identity of the pilot hasn't been released.

Gary police spokesman Cpt. Gabrielle King told the Associated Press the scene is "chaotic" but had no other immediate details about the crash.
