Tuesday night's storms spawned funnel clouds in the western suburbs of Oak Brook and Hinsdale, but the worst storm damage appears to have been caused in Maywood.
High winds caused a tree to fall on a house on South Maywood Drive at about 6:30 p.m. The impact pushed branches through the roof and damaged a porch, allowing rainwater to flow in.
"My grandfather was actually sitting right there in that chair and it was seconds after he came in that this happened," said resident Michelle Eiland.
All down the street, tree branches and small trees littered the ground.
No injuries were reported, however.
Funnel clouds were reported in Oak Brook and Hinsdale with the storms that brought heavy rain, high winds and lightning, but no reports of serious damage.
NBC Chicago Storm Team meteorologist Brant Miller said the funnel clouds were caused by a weak upper-level disturbance interacting with the Lake Michigan breeze.
The storms dumped a couple of inches of rain in some areas in a short amount of time.
Several communities reported hearing tornado sirens.
More than 85 flights were canceled at O’Hare because of weather conditions, and other flights were experiencing delays averaging 60 minutes, according to the city’s Department of Aviation. Flights at Midway were experiencing delays of up to 90 minutes.
