Fridge DeliveryTurns Frigid for Suburban Couple After Floors Scratched

You would not expect an appliance delivery to damage your home. So what happens if a company won’t offer enough money to pay for a full repair?

Joe and Lydia Wesolowski of Willowbrook said their kitchen floor took a beating after a company working for Sears delivered a refrigerator. The couple’s old refrigerator broke the day after Thanksgiving.

Lydia said after they bought a new fridge, they noticed it was too loud. So they had Sears deliver a replacement.

“When they pulled the old one out, they scratched my floor,” Lydia said.

She said the company working for Sears asked for repair estimates. So Lydia and her husband contacted two different floor repair experts. The companies quoted $750 and $850, respectively.

According to the Wesolowskis, the floor experts said the floor needed to be completely stripped.

“If they only repair the section that’s scratched, it’s not going to match the rest of the floor,” Lydia said.

Lydia and Joe received a reimbursement check for $116. They said the company told them it would only pay per linear foot of the damaged area.

“It would be patchy and discolored,” Lydia said.

The couple said it was also frustrated by several replacement refrigerators that arrived to their house damaged.

NBC 5 Responds contacted Sears and asked if it could look into Lydia and Joe’s floor reimbursement situation. In a written response, a Sears spokesperson said the company has high standards for the quality of service it provides.

“Our customer service team had been in contact with Mr. and Mrs. Wesolowski and we are pleased to report that we have resolved this matter to their satisfaction,” the spokesperson wrote.

Indeed, the couple received a check for $850 several days later and a new refrigerator was delivered.

“This is great news!” Lydia said. “I’m happy because they’re going to fix the floor and now we have a refrigerator that looks like it’s going to work.”

The Better Business Bureau urges consumers to watch delivery crews closely. They said if delivery crews know you are watching, they will be more careful. And that way you can also have them document any possible damage.
