Free Self-Defense Class Sunday in Wake of Attacks

The Guardian Angels are offering a free self-defense class for women after a string of sexual assaults on Chicago's West Side.

The class will run from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in Garfield Park, at the corner of Lake St. and Central Park, under the Green Line's Conservatory stop.

For more information, call 312-217-7245 or e-mail Chicago@guardianangels.org.

Woman ages 16 and up are welcome, according to a release from the community safety group.

The attacks, eight in all, have happened since August in West Side neighborhoods ranging from United Center Park to the Austin community. The most recent attack happened early Friday in the 600 block of North Leamington, where a man robbed and sexually assaulted a woman.

Police believe the same man is responsible for all the attacks. He's described as black, in his 20s or 30s, 5-foot-5 to 6 feet tall, and weighing between 130 and 170 pounds. He's usually dressed all in black during the attacks.

Every one of the assaults has happened between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. The man approaches a woman who's walking alone, parking her car or entering her home, pulls a gun and robs, then sexually assaults her.

Anyone with information about the attacks should call police.
