Four Rescued From Sinking Boat On Lake Michigan

Nobody injured as boat loses power near 39th Street

Four people were rescued from a tugboat that sank in Lake Michigan on the South Side on Monday afternoon.

Crews first responded to the boat just before 5 p.m., according to fire officials.

Deputy District Fire Chief Ron Dornecker said the tugboat lost power, possibly from big waves splashing onto the front of the boat.

"The winds and waves are bad, it's pushing that boat into shore right now, so it's a good thing we got out there as quickly as we did and removed the people," Dornecker said.

Emergency crews safely rescued all four males aboard the tugboat who had climbed onto a nearby barge when their vessel started taking on water.

The Coast Guard is working to salvage the tugboat.
