Firefighter Seriously Injured in West Side Fire

Ten people left without a place to live

A firefighter was seriously hurt battling a fire late Friday night in the Austin neighborhood.

Just before midnight, an abandoned 2 1/12 story house caught fire at 519 N. Lawler Ave.  The fire spread to an occupied home next door which displaced 10 people. 

The firefighter was hit by debris while battling the blaze and was taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Nobody else was injured.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance for the five adults and five children that were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
