Schiller Park police say 47-year old Edward Mendelson had a large collection of images and videos on his laptop at the firehouse where he worked. The 16 year veteran of the fire department was arrested and suspended without pay. NBC 5’s Natalie Martinez reports.
A Schiller Park firefighter faces multiple child pornography charges after investigators say he downloaded images and videos to his laptop.
Edward Mendelson, 47, of Chicago was charged with two felony counts of Child Pornography/Dissemination and two felony counts of Child Pornography/Possession.
Prosecutors say the Cook County State's Attorney's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Chicago Police Department traced the questionable material to a user at the Schiller Park Fire Department and seized Mendelson's personal laptop computer during a search.
Investigators say an examination of the laptop revealed video and pictures of children under the age of 13, and children between the ages of 13 and 17 committing acts of sexual conduct and sexual penetration.
Mendelson has worked with the department for 16 years. The Village of Schiller Park released a statement saying it's aware of the charges, and "the allegations, if true, are abhorrent."
Mendelson was arrested Thursday and appeared in bond court Friday where bond was set at $150,000.
He's been suspended without pay, pending a hearing before the board of fire and police commissioners.
