Fire Reported at Maywood High School

Firefighters were dispatched to Proviso East High School, 817 N. 1st Ave., Saturday night

Emergency crews were at the scene of a fire at a west suburban Maywood high school Saturday night.

Firefighters were dispatched to Proviso East High School, 817 N. 1st Ave., Saturday night for reports of a fire, Maywood police spokesman Officer Pirsia Allen said.

Sam Shahne, 27, works at Maywood Express, a gas station at 2 S. 5th Ave., about a quarter-mile away from the school.

“There was a lot of heavy smoke but it seems to have died down now,” he said about 10 p.m. “There’s a really bad smell, too. The smoke is coming from the third-floor window.”

Shahne added that nearly a dozen fire trucks and ambulances were on scene.

The fire is believed to have started on the second or third floor of the building in what witnesses said may have been a science lab.

Students were inside the school rehearsing for a school play at the time, according to witnesses.

Meanwhile, the Maywood Fire Department confirmed crews were sent to the high school but could not immediately provide further details Saturday night.

No injuries were immediately reported.
