Fire Engulfs Building, Spreads to Another

One roof caved in and another partially collapsed

A raging fire leapt from one building to another in Lawndale overnight, but firefighter were able to keep anyone from getting injured.

The fire started in an abandoned building in the 3100 block of West 15th St. around 12:15am Friday, said Larry Langford, director of Fire Media Affairs.

Those flames spread from the boarded-up, three-story brick building to a building just east of it.

Six people inside the second building escaped without injuries, said Langford.

Firefighters battled the blaze, which engulfed the first building's roof forcing it to cave in, the Sun-Times reports.

The fire also damaged the second building's roof, which partially collapsed, he said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze about 1:20am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
