One person is dead and at least four others were seriously injured, according to police, after a fire broke out in a River North high-rise garage Saturday afternoon.

Heavy police presence and fire crews were seen around 1:30 p.m. responding to a fire incident in the Mart Parc Orleans garage at 437 N. Orleans St., fire officials said.

According to Deputy District Chief Cynthia Herring, all of the individuals affected were workers for a roofing company that were working on the elevator penthouse rooftop area of a building.

Herring said the fire was out within approximately 15 minutes of it being reported.

Two of the four injured were transported to Northwestern Memorial hospital and the other two were sent to nearby hospitals, she said.

The winter weather may have played a role, Herring said.
