FedEx Employee Shot While Working

A FedEx courier was one of two people shot Friday evening in the Oakland neighborhood on the South Side.

A woman, whom FedEx confirmed was an employee, was shot twice in the leg near 41st and Drexel Boulevard and taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition, police said.

A 19-year-old man, shot in the left arm, also was transported to Northwestern in serious condition.

Residents of the area said the shootings were likely due to gang violence, the Sun-Times reports. Officials said they believe the courier was not the intended target of the shootings.

The shootings happened at 6:37 p.m.

“This is a difficult time for us. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our employees,” FedEx said in a statement.

FedEx officials said they are cooperating with police.

Overall, there were seven people shot in Chicago during a seven-hour period from noon Friday to 7 p.m., including one fatality.

A 20-year-old man was killed about 1:30 p.m. in the 300 block of East 51st Street, officials said.
