Father of 19-Year-Old Fatally Shot by Chicago Police Files Wrongful Death Suit

The father of the 19-year-old man who was fatally shot by Chicago police Saturday has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

Antonio LeGrier’s lawsuit alleges that an officer did not help his son Quintonio as he was dying.

The suit also claims that "video recordings of at least a portion of the events" are available and have been confiscated by the city.

Although police called Quintonio LeGrier a "combative subject," the suit argues that he was unarmed and "never posed a danger of threat or harm." The suit also called the shooting "excessive and unreasonable.”

A request to the city for comment wasn't immediately returned.

Quintonio LeGrier, a 19-year-old Northern Illinois University student, was shot and killed in the 4700 block of West Erie in the city's West Garfield Park neighborhood while police responded to a domestic disturbance report involving LeGrier and his father. Neighbor Bettie Jones, 55, was also killed, which police said was an accident.

Their deaths were ruled homicides, and the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.

Meanwhile, the mayor announced on Monday that officers involved in shootings will now immediately be removed from the field under a new policy within the police department.

"We must take the use of force by our officers extremely seriously, and this new policy provides more time to ensure a thorough examination of an officer's fitness to police our streets after they have fired a gun," Emanuel said in the announcement.

Emanuel is also cutting his family trip to Cuba short after the police shootings.

Emanuel has faced mounting criticism and calls for him to resign following the release of the dashcam video showing the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald. Emanuel publicly apologized for the police shooting death of the 17-year-old in a special address to Chicago's City Council on Dec. 9.
