Families Displaced by Christmas Fire

Community rallies to help victims of apartment blaze

Christmas was anything but joyous for some Mt. Prospect residents after a fire ripped through an apartment building.

Lorena Marquez was staying at a relative's home with her husband and four children when her landlord called her at 4 a.m. Christmas morning to tell her about the fire.

"There was smoke everywhere. It was like a big rainstorm or a hurricane had come through my apartment because there was nothing but water coming down," Marquez said.

The fire started in the apartment above Marquez's, where firefighters had to rescue three people.

The fire never reached Marquez's home, but it's uninhabitable for the time being. Firefighters were able to move the presents under the tree to a back room so they only received slight water damage.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the community has rallied around the rest of the victims of the fire to provide Christmas presents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
