The FBI on Monday showed off a cache of ancient artifacts that a suburban Chicago man apparently hoarded in his home for decades. The FBI unveiled millions of dollars worth of stolen manuscripts and other antiquities found in the home of a suburban Chicago collectibles dealer on Monday. This manuscript with a wax seal in a wood container from May 14, 1574 was among the item displayed at FBI headquarters in Chicago. A handwritten Crest Doctorial Diploma dated Dec. 13, 1662 from the University of Naples is part of the collection. A manuscript from 1926 bearing the signature of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was also displayed. The FBI isn’t exactly sure how much the collection, including this Daunia Vase, is all worth. They estimate the total value is somewhere between $5 million and $10 million. Terra cotta figurines from the 4th century B.C. were among items found in the collection. Bonnie Magness-Gardiner, national art theft program manager for the FBI describes the terra cotta figurines found in the home of a suburban Chicago home collectibles dealer. FBI special agent and spokesman Ross Rice announced that millions of dollars worth of stolen manuscripts and other antiquities, some dating back to the 4th century B.C. will be sent back to Italy.
