The battle to control mosquitoes in the Chicago area this summer has already begun, and officials are concerned this year’s mild winter could mean big problems.
Tuesday’s rainfall sent mosquito abatement workers into action in southern Cook County as they worked to inspect for any potential breeding grounds.
“We are actively inspecting and treating areas that are breeding mosquito larvae,” said Douglas Wright with the South Cook County mosquito Abatement District.
Wright said the district’s crews started working on mosquito abatement weeks ago.
Mosquito experts believe this year’s mild winter could help provide an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“If we see a dryer than normal pattern between April through June, that could mean an increase in West Nile Virus activity,” said David Zazra, with the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District.
Experts encourage residents to take precautions heading into the warmer and wetter months.

They advise removing any water holding containers, maintaining gutters and eliminating standing water where possible.
