A former candidate to be Chicago's police superintendent has been named to lead an effort to oversee reforms within the Chicago Police Department.
Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says former Spokane, Washington, police chief Anne Kirkpatrick has been chosen to lead the department's new Bureau of Professional Standards, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.
Kirkpatrick was one of three finalists to replace fired former superintendent Garry McCarthy. She didn't get the top job when Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel chose 28-year Chicago police veteran Eddie Johnson.
Kirkpatrick's new job will include implementing recommendations of a Police Accountability Task Force formed after video was released of a white officer fatally shooting a black teenager 16 times. After the video was released Emanuel fired McCarthy.
