Ex-Glen Ellyn Firefighter Gets Prison for Theft

A former volunteer firefighter from Glen Ellyn has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing more than $260,000 from the department.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said Friday that 56-year-old David Garmoe pleaded guilty before he was sentenced by Judge Daniel Guerin.

Prosecutors say Garmoe was treasurer of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company when he wrote unauthorized checks to himself and his business from the department's bank account. Garmoe served as treasurer for 20 years, although authorities say the thefts happened between 2004 and 2011, when he was caught.

He also was ordered to pay full restitution — almost $263,000. He already has repaid about $44,000.

Garmoe must serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Berlin says Garmoe acted alone.
