Everything to Know About This Weekend's Clear the Shelters in Chicago Area

If you're planning to bring home a new furry friend during this year's Clear the Shelters in the Chicago area, you're not alone.

And if you have questions surrounding what you should do for the big event, you're probably also not alone.

What is Clear the Shelters?

NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago have teamed up with animal shelters across the Chicago area and northwest Indiana to find forever homes for deserving animals. 

Dozens of shelters in Chicago, the suburbs and northwest Indiana will waive or discount fees as part of the one-day adoption event.

When is it?

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19

Are all animals available?

The waived fees apply to animals ages 6 months and older. 

Has this event been successful?

Last year, more than 53,000 pets were adopted during the nationwide campaign. Several shelters were cleared across the country and many others nearly cleared. For a look at the event in the Chicago area, click here

Is this safe for the animals?

While many shelters will be waiving or discounting fees, the staff at each animal shelter will have complete control over who adopts the animals. Each shelter's adoption policy remains in effect throughout Clear the Shelters. 

When should I arrive?

Arrive early. In previous years, long lines have formed outside shelters ahead of the event, filled with people hoping to find their furry best friend.
