Epstein to Cubs Deal Close, Sources Say

The Red Sox and Cubs could make an announcement as early as Thursday

The waiting is the hardest part.

A rumored deal between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox for wunderkind GM Theo Epstein has been hanging in limbo for more than a week.

But it appears that both sides are ready to announce a deal.

Both the Cubs and Red Sox expect to make a deal that will allow general manager Theo Epstein to move to Chicago to become president of baseball operations, according to sources.

A deal is expected Thursday and a press conference could come as early as Friday, in the middle of the World Series between the Texas Rangers and Cubs rivals the St. Louis Cardinals. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig must sign off on the deal, and the timing fo the announcement.

The holdup to the announcement, according to ESPN.com, has been how much the Cubs will compensate the Red Sox for Epstein. Another snafu is which members of Epstein's front office staff in Boston he will be able to bring to Chicago.

If Epstein does indeed become Cubs president, the team will still need to fill the job of GM.
