Elderly Woman Found Dead in Suburban Home, Mauled by Dogs: Police

It was not immediately clear if the woman’s death was caused by the dog mauling or if the dogs bit the woman after she died, police said

A 71-year-old woman was found dead inside her suburban home Tuesday, her body mauled by two dogs, authorities said.

The woman’s body was discovered just after 5:30 p.m. in the 26000 block of West Channel Avenue in Antioch when her 23-year-old grandson arrived home from work and found her in a bedroom not breathing, according to Detective Christopher Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff’s office.

"The grandson informed 911 dispatchers it appeared two dogs inside the residence attacked his grandmother," police said in a release.

The two dogs inside the home, a lab-chow mix and a German shepherd, had bitten the woman several times, Covelli said.

It was not immediately clear if the woman’s death was caused by the dog mauling or if the dogs bit the woman after she died, police said.

The Lake County Coroner is expected to perform an autopsy Wednesday morning to determine a cause of death. Her identity was not being released as of Tuesday evening.

Police said the dogs were placed in the custody of animal control.
