Ducks Beat Blackhawks 3-2 in Overtime Thriller

For the third time this week, the Chicago Blackhawks lost at home as Ryan Getzlaf's overtime goal gave the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions.

The Blackhawks' offense was paced by defenseman Brent Seabrook, who scored his ninth and tenth goals of the season in a losing effort. Corey Crawford made 41 saves for the Blackhawks as he was tested thoroughly yet again.

The game started out well for the Blackhawks from a defensive perspective, as they limited the Ducks to just two shots on goal through the first seven minutes of the contest, but Chicago couldn’t figure out how to get their offense going. They got a handful of shot attempts, but nothing would go as the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes of play.

Early in the second period, the Blackhawks got a power play, but Anaheim was still able to seize the momentum and get things going their way. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf each registered quality chances on net against Crawford, but the goaltender was able to knock aside the shots and keep his team within striking distance.

Late in the frame, a rough sequence ended up costing the Blackhawks one of their top forwards. Marian Hossa was forced from the game after he took a hit from Hampus Lindholm, crashing into the boards before having to be helped off the ice by training staff.

Hossa’s replacement after the hit was Richard Panik, and after the forward drew a penalty, the Blackhawks were finally able to hit paydirt. Seabrook found the puck in the slot and hammered a shot on net, but it was denied by John Gibson. No Ducks player could clear the puck away however, and Seabrook got his own rebound and blasted home a shot past the Anaheim goaltender’s glove to give Chicago a 1-0 lead.

Early in the third period, the Ducks and Blackhawks found themselves engaged in a 4-on-4 situation, and Anaheim was able to capitalize and tie the game up. After a mad netfront scramble near Crawford, Jakub Silfverberg was able to collect the puck and muscle it past the goaltender to knot things up at 1-1.

A little bit later, Duncan Keith turned the puck over behind the Blackhawks’ net, and Anaheim scored to take the lead. Ryan Getzlaf rifled a pass to the front of the netmouth, and David Perron hit a one-timer into the back of the cage to give the Ducks a 2-1 advantage.

With about eight minutes to go, the Blackhawks tied things up at 2-2. With Andrew Shaw and Jonathan Toews providing traffic in front of the net, Seabrook got a pass from Andrew Desjardins at the top of the face-off circle, and his slap shot found its way through a sea of skates and sticks and evaded Gibson to pull the two teams back even.

Unfortunately for the Blackhawks, they couldn't figure out how to get both standings points. After a too many men penalty in overtime gave the Ducks a power play, Getzlaf hammered home a rebound off a Cam Fowler shot to give Anaheim the victory.

The Blackhawks will look to end their three-game losing streak on Monday night when they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at the United Center.
