Family Makes Plea for Information in Northwest Side Fatal Hit-and-Run

Carroll Brown's family said he was a security guard at O'Hare airport. He was also a cancer survivor, and was always ready with a joke and a story for passersby.

A family is asking for anyone who has information about the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Chicago’s Northwest Side to contact police.

On Dec. 4 at approximately 8:20 p.m., a 76-year-old man was walking in the 4800 block of North Central Avenue in the Jefferson Park neighborhood when he was struck by a light-colored SUV, according to police.

The victim, identified as Carroll Brown, lived in the 4900 block of North Central Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He died that following Sunday. Brown’s death was ruled an accident.

Carroll Brown's family said he was a security guard at O'Hare airport. He was also a cancer survivor, and was always ready with a joke and a story for passersby.

“It’s not going to be easy and everyone misses him,” said his daughter, Carole Brown. “My heart hurts right now because it's so sudden. There's no chance to prepare yourself.”

The family is asking for anyone who may have information about the hit-and-run driver to contact police.

“How can you do this to a person?” Carole Brown said. “If you do this to one person we have to get him off the street. Who has the gall to do that kind of thing?”

Investigators on Thursday released a photo of the suspected vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Police believe the SUV, possibly a Buick Enclave, has extensive front-end damage and a broken windshield.

A GoFundMe page with a donation goal of $5,500 was set up to help cover medical expenses and funeral costs. As of Thursday night, more than $4,100 was raised.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit at (312) 745-4521.
