Dog Fatally Shot During Morning Walk

The dog and owner were on a walk near Cricket Creek Forest Preserve in Addison

A Yorkshire terrier was fatally shot Saturday morning while on a walk with its owner near the Cricket Creek Forest Preserve.

DuPage County Police said Rosa Figueroa was walking the dog at 10:50 a.m. on Fullerton Avenue in Addison, about 45 yards east of Villa Road, when the dog was struck.

"She heard a popping sound, as she described it, and her dog went down, and she found that he was bleeding," said DuPage County Forest Preserve Police Chief Tom Wakolbinger. "It was determined that it was a gunshot wound that had passed all the way through the dog's head."

The dog's owners, Rosa and Daniel Figueroa, declined to speak with NBC Chicago.

"She and her husband were both pretty upset," Wakolbinger said. "The dog was a very special member of their family. They're grieving over the loss of a family member."

Police continue investigating the incident.
