Deerfield Teen Found Safe After Going Missing From Oregon Camp

“It appears he’s going to be OK,” Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said. “He was taken to the hospital for possible dehydration and a physical.”

A 2014 Deerfield High School graduate was found safe today after going missing from his Oregon nature camp for more than 24 hours.

Searchers on horseback found Kevin Mulert, 18, of Deerfield, at 10:30 a.m. today approximately 1.5 miles from the camp, where he was last seen at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. He was reported missing at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

“It appears he’s going to be OK,” Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said. “He was taken to the hospital for possible dehydration and a physical.”

Mulert walked away from camp unnoticed Wednesday, officials said.

Searchers provided Mulert initial medical care and water, according to police. It appeared to them he was dehydrated. He was to be taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Ore., by Oregon National Guard helicopter. His family has been notified.

More than 30 people from three Oregon counties took part in the search, led by the Lake County (Oregon) Sheriff’s Department.

A combination of search and rescue personnel and volunteers looked for Mulert not only on horseback but also on foot as well as in motor and all-terrain vehicles, police said. Both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were deployed from the Civil Air Patrol and Oregon National Guard. Canine crews were involved as well.

In high school, Mulert was on both the wrestling and football teams.

“He’s a tough kid, a strong kid, and no stranger to camp,” wrestling Coach Marc Pechter said. “He’s a really, really, good kid.”
