Man Shot in Head in Englewood

A verbal altercation leads to shooting on the south side, police said

One man was shot dead and another was injured Sunday night after a verbal altercation in the south side Englewood neighborhood, according to police.

Police say the shooting happened around 10 p.m. Sunday night in the 6900 block of South Wolcott Avenue. It appears a verbal altercation with a gunman lead to the shooting, police news affairs said.

Jerrod Benton, 22, died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The second victim, a 31-year-old man, was shot in the hip and back, but reported to be in good condition, police said.

Police say as of this morning, no one is in custody. Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
