Dashcam Video Shows Deadly Crash During Police Chase in Chicago

The chase began after a robbery in southwest suburban Tinley Park, according to police

Graphic video released Tuesday shows what exactly happened when a police chase that began in a Chicago suburb turned deadly on the city's South Side over the summer.

The footage from two different vehicles was released by the Independent Police Review Authority. It shows officers chasing a vehicle around numerous streets in the city's West Pullman neighborhood, eventually going the wrong way down a one-way road.

The video appears to show the suspects' vehicle being struck by a police squad car near an intersection around 125th and Union, sending it flying toward a nearby home.

(WARNING: Graphic footage) Dashcam video released Tuesday shows what happened when a police chase turned deadly on Chicago’s South Side over the summer.

Two suspects were killed and four Chicago Police officers were injured in the fiery rollover crash on July 1.

Police allege the suspects were involved a robbery outside an Arby's restaurant in southwest suburban Tinley Park. According to authorities, a restaurant manager making a cash drop at the neighboring bank was confronted in the parking lot.

The suspects took the money bag and fled.

State police reported the vehicle on I-57 as the suspects headed into the city.

Witnesses say they saw a Chicago Police SUV chasing the vehicle before it rear-ended the suspects' car. The crash flipped the suspects' car and sent the SUV slamming into a nearby home, mangling an elderly couple's wheelchair ramp.

Four suspects were initially injured, but two listed in critical condition were later pronounced dead, Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said at the time.

Four officers in a police squad car were also injured in the crash, but their conditions were stabilized, Guglielmi said.

"Thank God I'm alive," said Michael Wells, who owns the home hit by the SUV. "I'm a disabled veteran. God is merciful. I could have been dead."

The suspects killed in the crash were identified as 22-year-old Ronald Harrington and Jimmy Malone.

IPRA said the crash remains under investigation as of Tuesday. The agency is looking into whether policy regarding police pursuits was followed.

A May NBC5 Investigation of police pursuits found that in the past 10 years there were 141 police pursuit-related crashes in the Chicago area, which resulted in 108 people killed and another 216 people hurt.
