‘Daily Show' Host Says He Doesn't Want to Go to Chicago Because He Doesn't ‘Want to Die'

“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah said during an interview with Spike Lee that he doesn’t want to go to Chicago because he doesn’t “want to die.”

Lee was on the show Monday to discuss his newest movie “Chi-Raq.” The comment came as the pair discussed Father Michael Pfleger, a South Side pastor and anti-violence activist who inspired John Cusack’s character in the movie.

“This is a white, Roman Catholic priest, his name is Father Michael Pfleger, he’s been in that church on the South Side of Chicago for 40 years and he’s one of the leading anti-gun, anti-violence people in the United States,” Lee said.

“That’s amazing,” said Noah. “Now I want to go Chicago. Well, I don’t want to go because I don’t want to die.”

Despite audience laughter, Lee didn’t appear to be a big fan of the joke.

“Well, let’s not joke about that because it’s some serious, no disrespect, but it’s, blood is running on the streets of the South Side of Chicago,” he said.

Lee, during the interview with Noah, called Chicago “the murder mass capital of the United States of America.”

“Chi-Raq” made its world premiere last month, but the film’s title, a portmanteau of "Chicago" and Iraq," has garnered significant criticism throughout the production process.

Lee has said the film is a modern adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata. In the movie, a group of women organize to take a stand against the violence after a child is killed by a stray bullet. The film’s stars include Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, Teyonah Parris, John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson.
