Cubs to Officially Announce Maddon as Manager Monday

The Chicago Cubs went into the offseason assuming that Rick Renteria would be on the bench again for the 2015 season, but when Joe Maddon opted out of his deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Cubs acted quickly and have hired him to be the team's new manager.

Renteria, who had a 73-89 record in his one season with the Cubs, was fired on Friday afternoon to make room for Maddon. The 61-year old led the Rays to the playoffs four of the past seven years, but was able to opt out of his contract with the team when GM Andrew Friedman left and signed on as president of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Cubs will make the move official on Monday afternoon at 2pm when the team holds a press conference at the Cubby Bear, located just across the street from Wrigley Field.

Theo Epstein released a statement earlier on Friday saying that the team's decision to fire Renteria was because of their pursuit of Maddon. He said that the team offered Renteria several other positions within the organization, but that he would understand if the former manager would choose another option.
