Cubs Remind Fans of Metal Detectors, Increased Security at Wrigley Field

The new screening will be in place by Opening Day, the team said, in addition to the bag check already in place

Ahead of the Cubs' home opener on April 11, the team reminded fans on Thursday to plan ahead and arrive at games early this season to contend with newly increased security measures.

Team officials detailed its new security plan, which includes the addition of walk-through metal detectors at all Wrigley Field gates, in January "as part of a league-wide initiative to increase and standardize security procedures at each Major League ballpark."

The new screening will be in place by Opening Day, the team said, in addition to the bag check already in place. The Cubs posted an FAQ and new security video on its website, encouraging fans to budget additional time for predicted longer lines, leave prohibited items at home and be ready to place belongings on an inspection table, among other tips.

“When you come into the ballpark,” Crane Kenney, president of Business Operations for the Cubs, said at the Cubs' annual convention, "unfortunately we are going to have to take you through metal detectors."

This marks the first time Wrigley Field has metal detectors, according to Kenny.

“Large venues like Wrigley Field and any large venue are targets,” Kenney said. “We gotta do everything we can to protect you, our fans, and our players and our neighborhood.”

The Cubs also asked the city for help controlling 100 feet in every direction around the ballpark, according to Kenney. The proposal would mean closing Clark and Addison to most vehicles on game days.

“That doesn't mean we want to own 100 feet in every direction,” Kenney said. “But we do want to know who is there and what driving and why they’re there.”

Additional netting also will be added to protect people in the stands, according to Kenney. The MLB last year recommended that all 30 clubs have protective netting between the dugouts for any field-level seats within 70 feet of home plate.

The Cubs will play the Reds during their home opener on April 11.
