Cubs Reach Another Historic Milestone With Win Against Pirates

If Chicago Cubs fans woke up this morning and felt a little bit of a disturbance in the force, there is a good reason for that.

That’s because the Cubs, by virtue of their win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night, have accomplished something that they’ve never achieved since divisional play began in baseball in 1969.

They now have an 11 and a half game lead in the National League Central, their biggest division lead ever. Their win, combined with a St. Louis Cardinals loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday, has ballooned their lead out to their largest ever, and it has left them with a 99.9 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to Fangraphs.

For fans curious about when the Cubs last led the National League by this many games, you’ll have to look back all the way to October of 1929, when the Cubs held an 11 and a half game lead over the Pirates. They did make it to the World Series that season, but lost to the Philadelphia A’s in five games to extend their drought to 21 years.

If the Cubs want to extend their lead out even further, they’ll have an opportunity in the coming days, as the Cardinals arrive at Wrigley Field for a three game series beginning on Monday night at the Friendly Confines.
