Cubs Plan Tributes to Ernie Banks Throughout 2015 Season

The Chicago Cubs lost their best ambassador earlier this year when Ernie Banks passed away, and on Thursday the team announced plans to honor the legend with a series of tributes throughout the season.

The most noticeable tribute will be worn by all of the team’s players, as they will wear #14 patches on their road and home jerseys throughout the season. The team has used honorary patches in the past for legends like Harry Caray and Ron Santo.

In addition to the patches, the Cubs will honor Banks in other ways at Wrigley Field.

The team will give away commemorative pins to all fans at their opening night game against the St. Louis Cardinals, and they will also conduct a pregame ceremony before the nationally televised game at the ballpark.

There will be other tributes throughout the season, including games during spring training where the Cubs will wear hats with the number 14 emblazoned on the front. They will also have other giveaways during the season as well.

Banks passed away at a Chicago hospital on January 23 after suffering a heart attack.
