Cubs' Opening Day Game vs. Cardinals Moved Up

The Chicago Cubs will kick off their World Series title defense against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017, but fans itching to see the team take the field in a regular season game won’t have to wait quite as long as they initially did.

That’s because Major League Baseball has decided to move the game from Apr. 3, a Monday, to Apr. 2, a Sunday, in order to showcase it to a primetime audience on Sunday Night Baseball, the Cubs’ website announced on Monday afternoon.

The Cubs, who are coming off of their first World Series championship since 1908, will take on their hated rivals at Busch Stadium to open the regular season in the first of three series that they will play at the ballpark. The Cubs bested the Cardinals for the Central Division title in 2016, their first in nearly a decade, and will be hoping to do so again next season as they defend their world championship.

The Cubs’ home opener, is slated to take place on Apr. 10 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, whom Chicago defeated in six games to clinch the National League pennant during the postseason.
