Cubs Hope Wrigley Renovations Will Net Them All-Star Game

The Chicago Cubs are still in the process of renovating Wrigley Field, but with those repairs progressing, the team is looking to nab one of baseball’s showcase events.

That event is the MLB All-Star Game, which has not been held at the Friendly Confines since 1990. The league has favored hosting the game at new stadiums over the past 25 years, with a few exceptions (Fenway Park in 1999, Yankee Stadium in 2008), but the Cubs are hoping that the league will recognize the unique atmosphere that Wrigley Field would bring to the game.

To that end, it would appear that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is keeping an open mind about bringing the game back to Chicago.

He noted that the organization is "committed out pretty good -- '17 and '18" but added that "it's been a long time" since Wrigley has been considered and that "it's an iconic location," according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Cubs expect renovations on the park to be complete before the 2019 season, but even with a tentative end date in place, will baseball be willing to give the game to Wrigley even without a guarantee that the renovations will be done?

Manfred reportedly addressed that concern saying, “I don’t think the renovation has to be complete in order to consider Wrigley for a possible All-Star Game.”

MLB already has awarded the next three All-Star Games, with San Diego’s Petco Park set to host in 2016, Marlins Stadium holding the game in 2017, and Nationals Park serving as the backdrop for the 2018 Midsummer Classic.
