A man trying to cross Lake Shore Drive died after being hit by a taxi cab late Saturday night.

Police said the man was hit by a taxi cab around 11:10 p.m. crossing the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive, according to Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines. There was no crosswalk where the man was walking.

A nurse who drove by the accident stopped and tried to help the man before the ambulance got to the scene, according to a Chicago Tribune report.  His wounds were too severe for her to save him, the nurse told the Tribune.

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center  where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said the man was in his 40s.  His name has not been released.

The accident remains under investigation.
